CHAIRMAN’S CHAT
Wednesday, 16 September 2009

“My diary has been busy on behalf of the Business Chamber and I am proud and pleased to be able to represent our members’ views.  I attended a Garden Party courtesy of the Shrewsbury Town Centre Residents Association.  It was good to hear the views of residents and their aspirations for Shrewsbury and to see that they are often similar to those of our chamber.  I am most determined to continue this valuable link.

Shropshire Conference Centre is a hidden secret.  I went along to a reception where the Lord Lt A H Percy officially launched the venue. It was interesting to see the reception areas and training facilities that were available, plus a genuine Business Conference Centre – equipped with the latest state of the art technology.  Additionally the catering was excellent.  Would the members appreciate us organising a business function or members meeting at this venue?  Please let us know.

RAF Shawbury was another occasion where I was able to meet various civic dignitaries and it was a valuable way to liaise with important decision makers of the town.  Hosted by Group Captain ‘Bunny’ James.  RAF Shawbury are keen to develop their community ties with the town’s business and they will be making a presentation to us on 15th September at the Lord Hill Hotel. The Mayors Sunday was a long time ago now, – but it was a privilege to represent our Chamber which is now 107 years old.

Shrewsbury College is featured in this newsletter – and you can see how we are already making excellent progress with this first-class educational establishment.  The Priory School Bus College enjoyed a marketing presentation from my company and we continued supporting the Shrewsbury Sixth Form College by providing some personnel advice they requested.  Where possible we provide material or experience for the students to meet their syllabus requirements in each of the Colleges.

I continue to work for the benefit of Shrewsbury’s tourism industry by promoting town-based events for Destination Shrewsbury (in partnership with Shropshire Council; Shrewsbury Town Council; Shop In The Loop and Shrewsbury Tourism Association). Destination Shrewsbury has reformed and there are exciting plans in place!  New businesses are always a welcome addition to the special mix of shops and commercial services that make Shrewsbury a great place to live and work and we welcome them to join us in promoting our special town. Finally I would like to say ‘thank you’ for the contributions to this newsletter by our partners in different aspects of town life, and ask a question: ‘Is your business neighbour a SBC member?’ Why not invite them to enjoy the benefits of Chamber membership’’.

Yours sincerely

Peter Bettis
